1 : Urban Study , Petaling Street + Jalan Tun HS Lee
The project mainly focuses on critical analysis of the two sites, Petaling Street and Jalan Tun HS Lee - focusing not only on its physical attributes, but also on its soft sides, its history, culture, people, etc. The legibility analysis allows us to understand the the two sites by heart, through identifying its features and characteristics.
The project aims to serve the community of Petaling Street, providing a space for them to share their knowledge and experiences, as well as allowing them to socialise among one another. This specific library serves the local chinese community, defined as a trading space + social hub. Its main goal is to allow the local community to get in touch with their trading roots by providing basic trading skills and classes, as well as a proper platform for them to get into the business sector. It also provides social spaces for the local community such as cafes, art classes, play areas, etc.
The project in general pushes us to critically analyse the needs of the local people. It also taught us to distinguish the difference between needs and what we want as a designer. It is crucial to understand the local people, their way of living and the community as a whole in order to create a suitable space for them to use for years to come.
